โ™ฅ๏ธRemembrance Dayโ™ฅ๏ธ

Onyx class really stepped up to the mark today and led our Remembrance celebrations for the whole school!

To start the day, they wrote fantastic descriptive paragraphs about the poppy fields of Flanders. Then, the wonderful Team and Vice Captains led a virtual assembly for the whole school. Did you know that the Marigold is a sign of remembrance in India?

Leading virtual assemblies are hard but they did a wonderful job!

Next, the whole school gathered around our flag pole at the front of school where we shared a 2 minute silence in memory of all those affected by war and conflict. Caprice and Harry -our Head Boy and Girl- laid a wreath with a lovely message attached to it from everyone at Sound.

Back in school, Onyx Class then spread out into all classes and shared a range of Remembrance poems that they had learnt off by heart for their homework. They performed them beautifully and confidently and received lots of super feedback from the other children. Well done guys!

After this, Poppy shared her senses Remembrance poem (that she wrote last week as part of our poetry week) with Topaz class and five members of Topaz shared their Remembrance cinquain poems with Onyx Class. The imagery and choice of vocabulary was unreal! Wow!

Finally, this afternoon Year 5/6 investigated the roles of those who didnโ€™t go off to war and what part they played in the war effort. They looked at causes and consequences and realised that to win the war was a huge team effort. Peace was a team effort.

Onyx Class will always remember them โค๏ธ

โœ๏ธVictorian Explanation Textsโœ๏ธ

Did you know that without the Victorians the world would be a very different place?

To end our explanation text writing, Onyx Class wrote their own pieces based on โ€˜Why the Victorians are important in our history?โ€™

Here are a few examples of their final, published pieces of work. Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll agree that the children have worked incredibly hard on them! Well done everyone!

โšซ๏ธOnyx Class Challenge- Week 2 โšซ๏ธ

Your challenge this week is to make a GIANT piece of Art based on Remembrance. You can use anythingโ€ฆ.. your bedding, natural objects from outside, clothesโ€ฆ.. whatever you can lay your hands on!

Take a picture of your finished work of Art and bring into school or post it on our Teams page!

Good luck! I wonder which team will be bringing the trophy home this week? ๐Ÿคฉ

๐Ÿ’ถMoney Awareness Week ๐Ÿ’ณ

This week has been Money Awareness Week and we have had sooooooo much fun learning about it in Onyx Class.

Yesterday, we learnt that there are many ways we can pay for things. We investigated why we would use one method for some things and a different one for others eg a debit card or Apple Pay to buy your weekly shopping and standing orders or direct debits to pay bills.

Hereโ€™s what some of the children learnt:

โ€œThe difference between credit and debit cards. We didnโ€™t realise that credit cards mean that we are borrowing from the bank and that they add charges onto this money so we end up paying back more!โ€ Jack

โ€œ You need to be careful with Credit Cards. Itโ€™s important to make sure you can pay them off straight away.โ€ Sofiya

โ€œYou need to be careful with money and by doing a family budget it helps you to keep track of your spending and helps to reduce stress and anxiety.โ€œ Maison

โ€œCredit Cards are safer when buying things on line as they have more insurance.โ€ Poppy

โ€œApple Pay and Google Pay are really safe as they donโ€™t share the whole card number but only some of it so it is harder to clone than a card.โ€ Mrs Booth

โ€œYou need to make good decisions with money.โ€ Thomas

โ€œThere are lots of ways to pay online such as PayPal and Online Banking.โ€ Sam

After this, we helped the Williams Family with their budget. We decided whether they should use a debit or credit payment for each item and discussed why. We though about the cost of each item, the time in the month, what made good money sense and why different people may make different decisions.

Overall, Onyx Class learnt lots of important life skills. Who knew money could be soo much fun!

This week we are starting our BLOG challenges again, except this time we are playing for a Team ๐Ÿ†!! Whoop whoop! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Your challenge is to bring in a photograph of something in our local community that would have been around during the Victorian era ๐Ÿง

The team with the most photos will win this weekโ€™s trophy (we will be presenting these in Fridayโ€™s Assembly), but there will also be an extra ๐Ÿ† for the most well thought out picture!

Good luck!

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง British Gymnastics ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

We want to share with you all some fantastic news- Naomi Kyle (Year 6) finished 3rd in the British Gymnastics Competition this weekend earning herself a very heavy & shiny bronze medal! This puts her 3rd in the country! Wow, wow, wow!

โญ๏ธSuperstar! โญ๏ธ

I am sure you will all join us in saying how proud we are of her and this just shows that hard work does pay off! ๐Ÿคฉ

๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธHow has Victorian transport impacted our world today?๐Ÿš

This afternoon, Onyx class learnt that the Victorians invented the motor car, the bike, the train and the propeller boat. In groups, we worked out how these inventions have impacted todayโ€™s world.

The children worked really hard to prepare their presentation in 20 minutes and then present their findings to the rest of the class.

They all worked incredibly and realised that without the Victorians we wouldnโ€™t be able to live very far from our place of work, we wouldnโ€™t have goods from different parts of the world, we wouldnโ€™t have amazing sports such as track cycling and our businesses wouldnโ€™t be able to sell their products to such a wide market.

Wow! Great work Onyx! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‘ปHalloween Team Day๐Ÿ‘ป

Onyx Class have had a ghoulishly good time today for Team Day. In Maths, we planned frightfully fiendish Halloween Parties for the class with just ยฃ65 to spend! We focussed on keeping running totals and deducting this from the total amount. Our budgeting was superbly spooktactular! We canโ€™t wait for Money Week after half term to practise our skills even furtherโ€ฆ

In PSHE, we practised our acting skills whilst thinking about different scenarios based around trick or treating. We thought deeply about how our actions impact others, the consequences, what we should do and why people may choose the wrong choices sometimes.

Finally, we had fun on our Halloween orienteering trail followed by a pumpkintastic party to wish Olly all the best in his new school.

We will miss you Olly but wish you an amazing future!

Thank you to everyone who put so much effort into the amazing pumpkins and wonderful fancy dress! A HUGE congratulations to Maisy who our secret judge chose as their favourite!

Happy half term everyone! ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป๐Ÿ‘ป๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰
