Weather experts

Emerald Class have been amazing during the first few weeks of our Weather Experts topic! Here is an overview of some of our activities so far. We are so proud of the children’s hard work, they are certainly becoming weather experts!

English

Well done Emerald Class for working really hard on your writing to include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in your writing. We are also focussing on our class target to make sure all of our sentences make sense when read back aloud! Emerald Class are also working hard to spell their High Frequency Words correctly. Keep up the super work Emeralds!

Linking to our super science learning around the seasons, we have been learning about non-fiction books. We learnt about and wrote our own information texts about the seasons.

As part of our writing process (the Primary Writing Project), we then innovated our information text and created our own information texts about hibernating animals – again linked to our seasonal work in science. Emerald Class showed lots of interest in learning about different animals that hibernate. Here are a few examples of our work:

We also wrote our facts to make a special book all about hibernating animals. We loved becoming authors of our very own information books!

Maths

Emerald Class have been working very hard (primarily within 20) to work on number understanding. We spent a lot of time identifying tens and ones within a two digit number. Well done Emerald Class!

Here are some of our fun activities linked to learning our number bonds to help us add!

Keep practising your number bonds at home! Thank you for all your support with learning these!

How many different ways can you make numbers such as 5? 8? 10? 20?

Science

We have been thoroughly enjoying learning about seasonal changes and patterns in our science unit. We started by learning about each season in turn. We found out which seasons our birthdays are in and what we can expect to happen during each season. We learnt about how seasonal changes can affect animals. We learnt more about robins and what we can expect them to do each season. Emerald Class also learnt about hibernating animals.

Geography

In our Geography work, we have been learning about the four countries of the United Kingdom. We identified places in coastal and inland areas and then we compared weather patterns. We found out that coastal areas usually have more sunshine and wind than in inland areas. Emerald Class also kept a weather diary and identified different weather types. We have been lucky this half term to observe lots of sunshine, rain and even snow earlier in the term!

Emerald Class also used compass directions to help us to add weather symbols onto the UK map. We had great fun finding parts of the map to add different weather symbols.

Challenge: keep practising how to use a compass! Can you make up a good way to remember the compass directions of North, East, South and West! Mrs Styles would love to hear your suggestions for a team point!

PE

Emerald Class have been working so hard on their Coast to Coast challenge! Thank you for sharing all your miles that you did at home! Between home and school, Emerald Class did amazingly well and completed the class challenge of 200 miles! We are currently on 240 miles! Emerald Class love seeing their total increase! Keep up the super work!

Emerald Class have been enjoying learning and practising football skills! Here we worked on our dribbling skills!

Emerald Class made some beautiful rainbow pictures! We used oil pastels and then paint!

Computing

Emerald Class are working really hard on their computing skills. It has been a pleasure to see such great team work when the children work with a partner to practise their skills. Well done wonderful Emeralds!

Chinese New Year! 🐅

We have loved celebrating Chinese New Year this week!

Thank you so much for bringing in such amazing decorations for the new year celebrations. We loved learning about the Year of the Tiger! We created some beautiful descriptive writing about tigers and used this to create some wonderful acrostic poems. We also produced some brilliant tiger artwork.

Well done Emerald Class for all of your hard work – we are so proud of you! ⭐

📚NATIONAL STORY TELLING WEEK 📚

As part of National Story Telling Week (30th January- 6th February) , we have launched our new Poetry Spine. Each class now has a poetry box which contains a selection of fantastic poetry anthologies as well as a focus on a particular poet for each term.

The purpose is to increase the children’s familiarity and confidence with poems and rhymes from Reception to Year 6.

KS1 will share a POEM OF THE WEEK to encourage familiarity and repetition.

In KS2, we will share a POEM A DAY.

Look out on the BLOG in future weeks for the children’s favourite poems!

Christmas fun in Emerald Class!

We have had lots of festive fun over the last few weeks! 😃🎄⭐

First a huge congratulations to Emerald and Ruby class for all their hard work with their Christmas Production! Well done children – you all worked so hard to learn your lines, actions and songs to help make the whole production come together. We are all so proud of you! Thank you to all the parents and carers for all your hard work and support to help your children learn their lines and for providing such wonderful costumes!

We also enjoyed Christmas Jumper Day!

We also enjoyed ‘Tinsel the teacher’ where lots of tinsel, baubles and fun accessories were used! We had lots of fun decorating each other too!

We had lots of fun for our Christmas dinner too! We loved using the crackers!

We loved seeing a beautiful rainbow over school!

As part of our geometry work in Maths, we took part in Christmas themed shape work! It was lots of fun exploring the shapes! Can you spot some 2-D and 3-D shapes at home?

We also had a wonderful visit from Kathryn on behalf of Sound and Broomhall Chapel to help us learn even more about the Nativity. Well done Emerald Class for showing lots of good understanding!

Emerald Class also completed lots of super writing work this week and have created their version of the Nativity in their very own books that they made. They wrote pages and pages to show their understanding of events in the story! Wow!

We also had lots of fun for team day! 🔵🟡🟢🔴⭐

We learnt and performed some wonderful traditional carols, discussed some festive traditions from other European countries and we designed, baked and decorated our very own gingerbread Christmas trees!

Emerald Class also thought about the messages of Christmas. They talked about what is important to them. They had lots of lovely ideas! 😊🌟

Finally, we had such fun for our Elf run! Many thanks for all the super fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice. The children wore their elf hats and had lots of fun running around our track! Many thanks to Miss Wade for organising the event! It was lovely to see such smiley faces as the children completed their challenge!

Daisy shared this super elf joke with us today on this very fitting day! It certainly made Emerald class laugh!

What do elves learn in school?

The elf-abet!

😂

We have had a brilliant and busy term! We hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday and have lots of fun! Happy New Year and best wishes for 2022! 😊✨

We look forward to starting our super weather learning in January! ☁⛅⛈🌤🌦🌩❄☔

Emerald Class update and challenge!

Wow Emerald Class! What a fun and busy week we have had!

🔵🟡🟢🔴 See our blog challenge at the bottom of the post! 🎄

In English, we completed our innovated stories. The children worked really hard on their stories! Later in the week we wrote some super instructions for ‘How to build a snowman’ after being inspired by our snow day on Monday!.

Emerald children produced some super writing and worked brilliantly! They were great at independently including time words like ‘next’, ‘then’ and ‘finally’ in their writing. Well done Emeralds!

In Maths, we worked on comparing amounts. The children used the greater and less than symbols as well as the equals sign to compare amounts. We loved working mathematically to solve some tricky puzzles! Emerald Class were challenged to first solve calculations before working out which symbol was needed.

Emerald Class are busy at work!

We loved creating our rocket pictures inspired by the artist Peter Thorp. Some of his work is show below. Which image captures your imagination the most?

Emerald Class had lots of fun exploring the different images and using these to inspire their own art work!

We are also having a wonderful time in the run up to Christmas! 🎄

Our preparations for our Christmas Play are well underway! Emerald and Ruby Class have been working so hard on their performances!

We also had lots of fun decorating our classroom!

🔴🟢🟡🔵

Last part of the blog post.. our new blog challenge!

Next Friday, it is Christmas dinner day as well as being Christmas jumper day! To help us get even more into the festive spirit, this week’s blog challenge is to come to school with your very best Christmas cracker joke!

Mrs Styles enjoys this one:

What do you get if you cross Santa with a duck?

A Christmas quacker!

Can you think of a Christmas joke you can share with the class? Each entry will win a team point! 😃🌟

We hope you have a wonderful weekend! 😊

Snowy day!

We had lots of fun exploring the snow today! It is great fun to explore seasonal changes. 😃
The children had huge smiles on their faces and we had such a joyful time outside!

We have been busy writing our stories in English and working on subtraction in Maths! I’ll make sure to send updates on our learning this week! The children are working so hard and I’m really proud of their brilliant attitudes! Well done Emeralds!

Emerald Class also worked really hard last week learning more about the impact of plastic pollution. We took part in a special whole school assembly learning about the plastic pollution in our oceans and waters. The children shared lots of ideas about how we can use less plastic! We will continue this important learning this week too!

🔴🔵🟡🟢

Blog challenge! (From Monday 29th November to Friday 3rd December)

Here are some snowy photographs taken of school from this morning! It was a beautiful morning! Can you write a sentence about one of the photographs? Remember to make sure you include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between words. Read your sentence back and check that it makes sense. Bonus points for using lots of descriptions and adjectives too!

Share your super writing to gain a point for your team before Friday’s Celebration Assembly!

Emerald update!

Remember to check our class blog challenge at the bottom of the post!

We had another busy week in Emerald Class! Our class demonstrated lots of kind and caring words and gestures this week and we completed some activities to think about all the different ways we can be kind to ourselves, other people as well as being kind to our planet!

Keep up the amazing work Emeralds! 💕 We also have been working hard with the wonderful Ruby Class to rehearse for our Christmas Production! Keep practising your lines and remember to say them in your ‘hall voice’! 🌟

In English this week, we started our new unit on writing journey stories. We used the wonderful story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers to help kickstart our new topic. You might have this book at home to enjoy. If you don’t have a copy, you could always search for the book on sites such as YouTube and enjoy hearing it read to you.

As part of our Primary Writing Project work, we used this marvellous story and made it our own! We imitated the story and created our own version – The Way Back to School! Emerald Class are very creative! Our main character raided lost property and found a drone to fly all the way to a desert island. Our new story is no longer set in space; we have pirates, coconut trees and ships on the desert island! This week, I can’t wait to see what fun the children will have when they innovate the story further to make their own versions!

The children are working hard to make sure their sentences have capital letters, full stops and finger spaces! Keep working hard to make sure you include them independently Emeralds!

In Maths, we have been working on calculation. The children have been using and applying number bonds in their work. Emerald Class are trying really hard to learn number bonds. Can the children learn their number bonds to 10 off by heart? We use these number bonds in both addition and subtraction calculations so learning these mentally is incredibly beneficial.

We are going to focus on subtraction next week! 😊 You could make some subtraction questions at home. You could put 6 apples out for example. If 2 get eaten, how many are left? There are many opportunities to learn about subtraction at home!

Here are some of the kindness hearts we made in class. Thank you to Daniel in our class for the super idea! We made some heart paper chains to display our kindness challenges too. Here is a selection of our ideas. 😊

Homework! Road safety challenge

Thank you to Miss Wade for our road safety homework! Please see the email sent out with more information about our Road Safety learning. Here are the tasks:

Blog challenge! 🟡🟢🔴🔵

Well done to Blue team for winning our class blog challenge this week!

Linked to our road safety homework, I can’t wait to see the posters made which celebrate a Road Safety Hero! To enter the blog challenge this week I want you to come and tell my why the ambulance is painted in bright colours.

Well done Emeralds! We look forward to another fun and busy week at school! 😃

Kindness! ❤

This blog post contains our new blog challenge!

This week is Anti-Bullying week and the theme this year is ‘One Kind Word’. We can’t wait to participate in the kindness challenge and see all the different ways we can spread kindness! Emerald Class are such a kind and caring class!💖

Here is our Kindness challenge for this week for use at home and school. I wonder how many you can complete! 😊

Blog challenge for this week! 🔵🟡🟢🔴

Well done Blue team! You won last week’s blog challenge! Which team will win this week? 🏆😊

This week’s blog challenge is linked to our kindness challenge!

Listen to ‘The story of the Star Thrower’ which is shown below. Then use the template to show 4 different ways that you will be kind this week! I am sure you do lots of them all the time; this is a great way to really show just how kind and caring you are!

Instead of writing in the stars, you are welcome to think of your own way to show your kindness challenge if you prefer!

Make sure you show your kindness challenge to Mrs Styles or Mrs Huntbach to gain a point for your team!

What a lovely story! Here is a template for writing your kindness challenge on if you would like to use it. We can’t wait to share your lovely kindness work! ❤

Emerald Learning 🌈🚀

Well done Emeralds you have had another super week!

We have been working really hard on our learning in Maths to explore the concept of addition as well as to learn our number bonds!

On Friday, the children made their very own number bond rainbow which went home. Please help your children to learn these number bonds off by heart! We hope the rainbow might make a good display and a nice way to learn the different ways to make the total!

You worked super hard Emeralds! Keep working hard to form your numbers the correct way round too!

We love to explore the concepts within Maths. We used number cards, Numicon, tens frames, number lines and lots more resources! We like to use practical methods to help us to learn and embed the concepts. 😃

We had a great time learning about the very first person to land on the moon, Neil Armstrong! We found out lots about his adventures.

Did you know that his footprints are still on the moon even though it’s been more than 50 years since he has been! Wow!

It is such a joy to talk to Emerald Class about space. They have shared lots of knowledge so far! I think we have a few future astronauts and scientists in our class!
Emerald Class were also amazing when we created images of the solar system. We talked about the size of the planets and Emerald Class tried really hard to show this perspective in their work too!

Fantastic RE learning

Emerald Class love their RE learning with Mrs Huntbach! Emerald Class have been learning about the Jewish Festival, Sukkot. Sukkot is a week-long Jewish holiday that comes five days after Yom Kippur. Sukkot celebrates the gathering of the harvest. Sukkot also commemorates the biblical story of the Jews’ escape from Egypt. They wandered for 40 years through the desert, living in temporary shelters.

These temporary shelters form a large part of the Sukkot festival today. Jewish families create a Sukkah, which is a temporary shelter or hut built outside. The roof of the Sukkah must be made of something that used to grow in the Earth (such as palm leaves or bamboo). The walls can be made of any material that can hold up to the wind. Families will decorate their huts with leaves, fruit and vegetables.

Emerald Class have been superstars during their learning and made a model Sukkah with their partner. Super team work Emeralds!

Remembrance learning

We learnt lots about the significance of Remembrance this week and why the poppy is such an important symbol of Remembrance.

The children were excellent in our Remembrance activities. They were so respectful and thoughtful during our Remembrance assembly and when we went outside to have our two minute silence. Well done Emeralds!

As part of our Remembrance writing, we wrote poems this week. Here is a selection of some of our work:

We also wrote poems focussing on the red and black colours shown in the poppy.

We also worked really hard on our field of poppy masterpieces. We used paint to create the meadow and sky, followed by the red poppy shapes. Emerald Class then added more detail to the meadow by adding other flowers to the meadow using oil pastels. Well done Emeralds! The children really impressed Mrs Huntbach and I with how carefully they used the paintbrushes and pastels to create their work. We loved how much the children thought about the effect they wanted to create. It’s wonderful to see just how unique every piece is! Great work Emeralds!

Blog challenge update! 🟢🟡🔴🔵

Great work on so many entries to our blog competition this week! Here are the entries of the poppies made! We love them! Thank you for all of your hard work, the children have enjoyed sharing their creations with the class! 😃

Stay tuned to see which will be the winning team!
